[CRIMESCENE-sub-jumbo-300x207]The NYAC Loses Courts: Will No Longer Host Tournaments

New York, NY, WPH Press, 7/3/19- After hosting the world’s greatest handball players for most of the past century, the famed New York Athletic Club has announced it will permanently close its doors to tournament handball in 2019. The NYAC had hosted the annual Burt Kossoff Invitational for 49 years, with the Burt Kossoff held in conjunction with the WPH Race 4 Eight tour since 2014. The NYAC board of directors voted to convert two of the three handball courts into singles squash courts, leaving just one handball court at one of the country’s most storied athletic clubs.

“This is certainly a very sad day for NYAC Handball,” stated Burt Kossoff tournament director John Duggan. “With just one court, we will not be able to host tournaments going forward. I want to thank the WPH for all of its support throughout the years and we will truly miss our annual get-togethers and camaraderie and friendship that was part of this great tournament.”

“This is absolutely devastating news,” stated R48 Elite 8 pro and R48 tour administrator David Fink. “The NYAC is to handball what Wimbledon is to tennis; a revered and treasured site where the game’s greats have gathered every year. The NYAC has meant so much to me and all of our current and past players, as well as hundreds of fans who have traveled to the NYAC each spring to watch the game’s greats in the mecca of handball.”

The NYAC will continue to sponsor its handball team, as the world’s top-ranked players will still represent the NYAC in international events.

If more details become available, we will share them.  Until then, thank you New York Athletic Club, for the years of memories and rich history!
