KEISSER: Chapman enters hall unscathed

CENTURY CLUB: Legendary handball player has dominated on way to nine national championships. ByBob Keisser Sports Columnist Posted: 01/30/2012 10:30:51 PM PST Updated: 01/31/2012 06:14:18 PM PST

Of all of the athletes and coaches who have been inducted into the Century Club Hall of Fame, few can boast that they were essentially unbeaten during the Long Beach portion of their career.

David Chapman may have lost a handball match or two along the way to his current status as one of his sport's greatest players ever, but you'd have a hard time finding it on record anywhere.

Chapman was playing handball by the time he was 3, won his first title at the age of 7, was a national amateur champ by the age of 14 and won his first pro event at the age of 17. He regularly beat older players when he was operating out of the Long Beach Athletic Club - including the likes of local athletic legends George Timberlake and J.C. Agajanian - and had already amassed a personal trophy case of titles by the time he started high school at Wilson.

His record has earned him a spot in the 2012 class of the Century Club Hall of Fame that will be introduced at the organization's annual banquet Feb. 7 at The Grand. Former Millikan and Long Beach City College quarterback Greg Barton and golf icon Marlene Hagge Vossler will also be inducted.

"It's definitely an honor to be recognized with all of the great athletes that grew up and played in Long Beach," Chapman said. "I remember getting a Century Club Award in 1993 and speaking at a Century Club event when I was 11, so this is very special."

Few handball players have been as special as Chapman.

Ditto.
Also no other player will ever be strong enough to carry you through a match, DV.
