Anton is playing in the qualifier? He must have entered in secret. If Anton did enter, he could be facing The Aces breakout superstar Luis Cordova for a coveted spot in the Race draw. I may even make my webcast partner watch that match rather than facebooking, texting, tweeting, and message boarding. |

| The WPH LIVE webcast of the 2012 Art Coronado Memorial & Simple Green Race4Eight began Thursday when Carlos Chavez defeated George Garcia, 25-12. Garcia pulled off the upset of the race season when he picked off Andy Nett in the opening round of the qualifier in extra innings, 26-24. For Chavez, it's his second time qualifying over a 14 year open-level career.
Carlos Chavez later pulled Armando Ortiz in the blind draw and will play at 1pm (PST) LIVE in front of the WPH cameras at http://www.race4eight.com on Friday, January 6th. Luis Cordova (Mexico) faced former top five pro, Anton Wilson (Fresno, CA), in the finals of the Frank Zuniga qualifying bracket, in a monumental clash that featured today's Anton playing like the Anton from the 90's! For Anton, it's his return to pro singles after an eight year layoff. When the dust settled, Cordova found just two points on the scoreboard, as Wilson stunned the top 12 pro, 25-2 to take the bracket.
In the blind draw ceremony, Wilson drew David Fink's name and will play at noon (PST) at http://www.race4eight.com on Friday. Dan "the hand" Armijo (Island of Roatan, Honduras) matched up against former #1, Emmett "the Rock" Peixoto in the finals of the Ralph Mendoza Sr bracket. Both have interesting stories. Armijo (50) has been on the pro tour for 30 years and recently defeated Peixoto at the 2011 USHA 4 Wall Nationals. For Peixoto, he is coming off shoulder surgery and looking to make a huge splash in the Simple Green Race4Eight.
Emmett jumps out to a quick lead and cruises to a 25-11 victory over the aging veteran and then later pulls the #8 seeded, Tommy Little (Tucson Gungslinger), in a match that will be aired LIVE beginning at 10am (PST) at http://www.race4eight.com on Friday. Local favorite, Eddie "Chip" Morales and former qualifier Abe Montijo (Tucson, AZ), battled it out in the Art Coronado qualifier bracket to close out a great first day of Handball. Chip comes back from a 0-7 score line to take down Montijo 25-12.
In the blind draw, Morales pulls Charles Shanks name and will be on the court at 11am. You can watch live on Friday at http://www.race4eight.com.
Race For 8 Stop #4: Fresno Day 1: Qualifier The Race For 8 Fresno Qualifier featured hometown legends challenging the best players in the world. MDB Andy Nett was seeded first and was expected to cruise into the top 12, but Bakersfield native George Garcia had other ideas. Garcia recovered from a 21-24 deficit and three MDB rocket serves on three match points to shock MDB and the handball world with a 26-24 upset. Garcia faced former qualifier Carlos Chavez for a spot in the Top 12. Garcia was undefeated against Chavez in their previous head-to-head encounters, but Chavez overwhelmed a seemingly flat Garcia to build a 15-1 lead going into halftime. Garcia rallied to cut the deficit to 12-18, but Chavez was too steady and advanced 25-12. Chavez drew good friend and sparring partner Armando Ortiz in the Top 12 draw. Luis Cordova entered the Qualifier as the #2 seed and brimming with confidence on the heels of his 6th place finish in Race Stop #3 nearly two months ago in Tucson. Cordova faced local legend and former top 5 pro Anton Wilson in the qualifier final. Playing in his first pro singles match since 2003, Wilson looked like the top 5 player he was throughout the late 1990’s and early 2000’s. Wilson overwhelmed Cordova with incredible serves and amazing two-handed power and offense. Wilson dismantled Cordova 25-2, and drew long-time rival David Fink in the Top 12 draw. The third qualifier final between Dan “The Hand” Armijo and Emmett “The Rock” Peixoto featured a rematch of the 2011 USHA 4-Wall Nationals Round of 16 clash won by “The Hand”. “The Rock” was making his Race debut one year after right shoulder surgery. “The Rock” appeared hesitant with his right hand, but overwhelmed “The Hand” was powerful pass shots and devastating left-handed power. “The Rock” easily avenged his Round of 16 loss at The Nationals with a 25-9 win, and drew Tommy Little in the Top 12 draw. Local legend Chip Morales made his Race debut on his home court against the spirited Abraham Montijo. Chip had never lost a match against Abe, but that streak appeared to be in jeopardy as Chip fell behind 7-0 early in the match. Chip rallied with 12 consecutive points, eight of which coming via crack serve aces. Chip maintained the momentum to win a lopsided 25-12 match, fist-pumping and blowing kisses to his beautiful wife and adoring fans. Chip will face Charly Shanks in the Top 12 draw. Tune into raceforeight.com to watch all of the Round of 16 and Round of 8 action from Race Stop #3 in Fresno live! Every point counts, so do not miss a second of the action!

Please email to your friends and help us get the numbers up. If this one is successful, I believe we could raise enough funds to film and webcast the collegiate nationals in Feb??
Race Stop #4: Fresno Day 2: The Top 12 dazzled hundreds of awestruck fans in Fresno with incredible athleticism and riveting matches. Fresno’s Fox Sports KMPH Channel 26 arrived at 4:30 am to cover the event, breaking to four live segments per hour throughout the day. KMPH reached over one million local viewers, dozens of whom rushed to the event to play and watch handball for the first time. Emmett Peixoto kicked off Friday’s action and continued his comeback with a thrilling 25-22, 25-22 win over #8 seed Tommy Little. Fans and players experienced rally scoring for the first time in the Peixoto win. The format was unanimously supported because of the compelling conclusions in both games. Local favorite Chip Morales pulled off the biggest upset of the event by cruising past sixth ranked Charly Shanks. Chip controlled the action in both games with a devastating serve, never allowing Shanks into the match. Eighth ranked David Fink faced local legend Anton Wilson in one of the most highly anticipated matchups of the day. Buoyed by the support of dozens of family and friends, Wilson nearly upset the seventh seed in the second game before falling 25-14, 25-22. Armando Ortiz overwhelmed fellow Southern Californian and frequent practice partner Carlos Chavez 25-20, 25-11 to advance to the Elite Eight. Emmett Peixoto renewed his rivalry with top-ranked Sean Lenning in the first quarterfinal in the Elite Eight. Lenning displayed why he is the top player in the world in the fist game with an incredible display of offensive and power handball. Lenning captured game one 25-4 in just six minutes. Peixoto rallied in game two, playing fairly even with “The Freak”, but Sean was too aggressive and precise, advancing to the semifinal with a 25-4, 25-20 victory. Chip Morales was poised to continue his Cinderella run against current national champion David Chapman. Playing the best handball of his life, Morales captured a breathtaking first game 25-23 with gutsy deepcourt kills and fearless serves. Morales and Chapman exchanged the lead eight times in game two. The enthusiastic Fresno crowd tried to urge Chip to his monumental victory. Serving at 24-24, Morales was just two points from winning the match. Chapman relied on his experience and uncanny shotmaking to score consecutive points to force the tiebreaker. Morales appeared slightly flat in the decisive game, and Chapman methodically executed his gameplan to a 25-21 tiebreaker win to advance to his second consecutive Race semifinal showdown against Sean Lenning. David Fink challenged Naty Alvarado, Jr. in what has been a completely one-sided rivalry. Alvarado jumped to a 16-0 lead behind two-inch high unreturnable serves. Fink rallied to respectability, but Alvarado closed out the game with a decisive 25-14 victory. The second game was more of the same as Alvarado recorded 13 aces to advance to the semifinals 25-14, 25-14. Young superstars Luis Moreno and Armando Ortiz delighted the gallery with spectacular skill and agility in the final quarterfinal of the day. Ortiz played like a man possessed trying to notch his first ever win against Moreno in game one. Moreno appeared to be completely out of sorts as Ortiz captured game one 25-23. Moreno trailed early in game two before discovering his commanding serve. Moreno won 10 of 12 rallies to build an insurmountable second game lead, ultimately winning 25-17. Ortiz appeared to be physically drained in the tiebreaker, unable to sit down into his pre-shot position. Ortiz failed to capitalize on a number of opportunities early in the decisive game, allowing Moreno to build a comfortable lead. Moreno held on to advance to his fourth consecutive Race semifinal to face heated rival Naty Alvarado, Jr. Super Saturday features the top four seeds in the semifinals in what promises to be a spectacular day of handball. The top Southern California big ball players also made the four-hour trip north to Fresno for the Pro Big Ball Doubles Championship. Catch all of the action live on raceforeightlive.com. Every point counts so log in early and enjoy Super Saturday from Fresno! David Fink Attached Images:
