WimbleDotte 4

Do you want to try out an amazing sport where all of your opponents are as experienced as you? Everyone in the bracket begins at the same level…zero. Our fourth WimbleDotte will be held at the KCAC outdoor courts Saturday, June 23rd. We’ll have a party and introduce you to the game the night before, so come out for the pizza, beer, and basics of the game. Then the next day take on the rest of the rookies, jumpstart your handball career, and meet your new friends who are gonna help you do it. Instant comrades!

This is a highly successful new tradition that the KCAC is very proud of. We will give prizes to the winners, give (awesome) shirts to all of the participants, and fill you with beer and food all weekend. You will be begging to join our club after, and you just might get to for free if you do well enough. All you need to supply are sturdy shoes and athletic clothes. We’ll provide you with handball gloves, goggles, and game balls. The cost for all of this is a mere $20. For information, please download and print the entry form. Fill it out and mail it to the address on the entry. If you have questions, contact one of the names listed or click on the contact button on the KCAC site and I’ll get back to you.

To our WimbleDotte alumni, we will continue to have our Alumni bracket to see who has progressed the furthest. You better sharpen your game though, we have ‘Dottes that play 5+ times per week and are quickly moving up the ranks among the players, so it’ll be competitive. Entry will be the same as the rookie bracket.

Entry

Handball players and supporters: We welcome any feedback, swag, participation, or assistance from the greater handball world.
Today Prince/Ektelon announced they are filing for bankruptcy reorganization. Sadly, Prince has spent the last ten years watching idly while Babolat has taken their pro players and supplanted all of their market share. Let's hope they don't liquidate Ektelon and they land on their feet through all of this. In addition to being our lifeline, they also make some incredible court shoes. Now you all may resume not saying anything.

http://www.marketwatch.com/story/prince-sports-inc-and-us-affiliates-commence-voluntary-chapter-11-business-reorganization-proceedings-2012-05-01

We left Tucson around 7AM PST and crossed the border around Noon CST. We were greeted by our travel guide, Luis Cordova Jr. in El Paso. Our first stop was a press conference held at a modern day fitness facility. It was obvious that great planning had taken place with no less than four television stations covering the event. Vincent and Lewis took turns outlining the history, goals, and objectives of the WPH with Montijo acting as interpreter. Following the presentation a half hour question and answer period made it abundantly clear that the city and its players wanted to be part of next year’s Race 4 Eight.

Following the press conference, Luis Jr. and Abraham played a one game exhibition match (final score 21-19).

There were some outstanding matches yesterday. Looking forward to great finals today. Craig Trull had a brutal tiebreaker (20, 21, 9) against Merv Deckert yesterday. That makes two tiebreakers in a row for Trull. Vance McInnis needed a tiebreaker against Dan Carillo to advance. They are up at 9 in the 60 finals.

In the 55's it will be a classic PNW showdown with Glenn Carden versus Dave Steinberg. Steinberg got his first ever win over Vern Roberts and is looking very strong. They are on at 11:30.

The 35/40's will be John Robles and Bob Herrera. The 45's will be Robles and Agustin Herrera. It looked like it would have been Andy Kangas in the final against Robles, but he popped his Achilles towards the end of the second game.

Mike Linnik is in the finals of the 50's against Tom McGrath. Linnik had a nice win over Phil Kirk in the 55's and then got hammered by Glenn Carden. We will see if going two ways cost Linnik this one.

In the 65's, no surprises or upsets. Greg Raya and Bruce Handelman.

The 70's is old news with Ed Grossenbacher in the finals. He beat Wayne Neuman. However, on the other side is unseeded Michael Griffin. Griffin took out number two seed Bob Braine and number four Mike Driscoll. I think they need to check his ID. He does not look like he belongs in this group.

The 75's is another rerun of Charlie Wicker and Kevin Del Grande.

The 80's is a round robin with the two undefeated of Joe Lenhardt and Lew Buckingham squaring off.

Finally, for the big money it is number one seed Jennifer Schmidt against number three Tracy Davis.

My predictions:

35 - 45 John Robles

50 Mike Linnik

55 Dave Steinberg

60 Craig Trull

65 Greg Raya

70 Michael Griffin

75 Charlie Wicker

8o Lew Buckingham

Women Jennifer Schmidt

The best finals will be the 55 and 60s. Four excellent players.

The club has been in existence for five years, so there are finally alumni. 26 current and former players participated in the tournament. With the World players of Handball (WPH) and United States Handball Association sponsoring the tournament with memberships, balls and shirts, a great event was sure to unfold. Fliers and information for the Minnesota State Singles championships, Tall Corn tournament, Race4Eight, and the Minneapolis Summer Handball program were distributed. The seeding session of the tournament began with four pools of players playing round robin games of rally score to play themselves into their single elimination brackets. Then, there were four divisions of play where players played one game to 21 with a traditional scoring format.
After the conclusion of the single elimination bracket, anyone at the courts that wanted to play entered a 2-bounce tournament. The contestants were lined up by age (6 to 45) and divided into four courts. The six players in each court played to 11. The first three players to 11 in each court played a second game to 11. The winner advanced to the championship 2-bounce court for a final game to 11. The four court winners were 7 year old Zack Wells, freshman Joe Schnegelberger, sophomore Matt Larson, and coach/alumus John Stoffel. Matt Larson was victorious in a very competitive match. His name will appear on the prestigious 2-bounce trophy in the Handball Club’s trophy case.
Once all the tournament brackets were done, the players convened at Jake’s Stadium Pizza for pizza and camaraderie. We are hoping this event becomes an annual occurrence. If you want to follow the Minnesota State Handball program, follow us on Facebook by joining the Minnesota State Handball Club Facebook group.
